What is institutional child sexual abuse?
Institutional child sexual abuse is the sexual exploitation of children and young people, whilst they have been in the care of others in institutional settings, such as:
- Residential care
- Foster care
- School
- Church or church group
- Camp
- Sports club
What is the National Redress Scheme?
The National Redress Scheme is a response to the recommendations by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. It aims to acknowledge and support people who have experience institutional child sexual abuse.
How does the National Redress Scheme support victims of institutional child sexual abuse?
Victims or survivors of institutional child sexual abuse may be eligible for:
- counselling and psychological services,
- a direct personal response from the institution(s) responsible for the abuse, for example an apology, via letter, phone or video, or where possible in person,
- a redress payment.
