WA Independent Oversight System

Child Wise has contributed to the consultation process for the development of a system of oversight that will improve child safe culture and practice in Western Australian organisations. Child Wise is a strong advocate for a principles based approach to regulating child safe organisations and endorses the Western Australian Government’s work to regulate and monitor the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. We are pleased to offer commentary on the incoming oversight system and in particular recommend that the system takes a child rights approach, as well as ensuring the system includes adequate, transparent and consistent structures, guidance and capacity building supports.

NSW Child Safe Scheme

When Child Wise participated in the NSW Government’s initial public consultations into the development of child safe standards, we expressed our strong support for a rigorous legislative approach which would sharpen a collective focus on the safety of children and young people. Child Wise again welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the implementation of child safe standards in NSW by providing feedback on the Exposure Draft of the Children’s Guardian Amendment (Child Safe Scheme) Bill 2020.

2020-21 Pre-Budget Submissions

Public Consultation Submission
NSW Child Safe Standards

Child Wise made a submission to the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian in response to the Regulating Child Safe Organisations discussion paper, which proposes changes that would make it compulsory for many organisations in NSW to meet the child safe standards. Child Wise is of the view that a principles-based approach to regulating child safe organisations can provide a framework that is rigorous, outcome-focused, yet sufficiently flexible to adapt to the myriad child-focused organisations across the state.

Senate Community Affairs Reference Committee Inquiry into Out of Home Care Submission

This submission is Child Wise's response to the Senate Inquiry into Out of Home Care. Out of Home Care in Australia is under increasing strain, and there are serious concerns about the outcomes for children entering child protection and out of home care. This submission considers areas for concern, best practice responses, and broad principles for responding to the problems in out of home care.

National Inquiry into Children in Detention Submission

This submission is Child Wise's response to the Australian Human Rights Inquiry into Children in Detention. There have been serious incidents of abuse and neglect within detention facilities, and further abuses are at risk of taking place. There is now enough evidence to show that the conditions in immigration detention facilities are not, and cannot ever be, conducive to a safe and healthy environment for children.
